How strikeclubs came to be

Donna Leipzig is a 70 year old woman who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 10 years ago. To counteract the bad effects to the mind and body of this “movement disorder” her neurologist recommended that she try boxing, along with her regular exercise routine. Donna, who had always been an avid gym goer joined a boxing class for Parkinson’s, but soon realized that everyone's needs were totally different, and that it wasn’t benefitting her as she had hoped. After talking about it with her husband David and brother Gary, both lifelong fitness fanatics, they realized that one-on-one training—the way a boxer approaches a fight—would have much better therapeutic results for the individual. After all, not just age and fitness levels will differ among Parkinson’s patients, but the stage and the degree to which the condition affects ones physicality, will also vary widely. So they did some research and found that many neurologists, like Donna’s doctor, endorsed this kind of therapeutic training approach. They also realized that there was a large, unmet need across the Parkinson’s community for qualified personal trainers, and specific programs designed for this audience. So they decided to do it themselves and StrikeClubs was born!

Strike Clubs developed their own vigorous method that combines boxing, balance and coordination training—focusing on movement and requiring mental attention—to provide the “fighter" with a healthy, holistic workout to strengthen the body, as well as the mind. The results have been remarkable! To quote many of Gary's fighters: “His warmth, caring and compassionate approach, along with his extra effort and enthusiasm" is what makes Strike Club training the perfect workout to combat this debilitating condition. This condition-specific method of personal training is gaining wide acceptance, and Strike Clubs has become a leader in the growing practice. They now offer personal boxing and strength building sessions to 'fighters' in their upper east side and downtown locations, as well as in-home training, and also work with hospitals and support groups to perform boxing and total exercise demonstrations.

StrikeClubs has truly become a family affair! The reward David and Gary get from seeing the benefit that Donna and other fighters receive, was a perfect motivator for investing their time, energy and sweat, and are now on a mission to grow StrikeClubs so they can serve more people with this remarkably effective workout!
